Marugata Shibuichi Hotei Tsuba. Fantastic piece made in Shibuichi ( silver and copper alloy) with inlays of silver, gold, and bronce. Hotei, one of the sichifukushin playing with a boy. Elegant piece of great quality for any collector.

This Tsuba depicts an older man and a child playing together. We think this elderly man is probably Hoteison (布袋尊). He was a legendary priest. According to a theory, Hotei is the incarnation of Miroku Bosatsu (弥勒菩薩, the Bodhisattva Maitreya). He brought a big sack that was full of treasures. He was always in contact with people with a smile and gave his treasures to religious people. Due to his mild-mannered attitude, he was surrounded by children and became a topic of people’s conversations.

 On the upper side of this Tsuba’s front and backside, you would find pine trees are engraved. As pine trees keep their green color throughout the years by withstanding severe heat and cold, people thought this plant pattern represents eternal youth. The pine tree design gives us an elegant and noble impression; it might be another reason that people appreciate this motif.
