Edo Period

General description

Complete Japanese samurai armor from the Edo period, notable for its strong visual presence and coherent martial design. The set features a deep dark lacquer finish, blue and cream odoshi lacing, and a construction clearly intended for real combat rather than purely ceremonial display.

The armor is well-balanced, with excellent proportions and a remarkably good level of preservation considering its age. It conveys solidity, authority, and a distinctly martial character.

Kabuto

Suji-bachi kabuto, constructed from multiple riveted plates with pronounced vertical ridges. It features wide fukigaeshi reinforced with gilt metal elements and restrained decoration.

The crescent moon maedate (tsuki no maedate) adds strong symbolic meaning, traditionally associated with vigilance, determination, and warrior authority. The helmet is completed with a well-proportioned kasa-jikoro and original lacing.

The rear retains a red agemaki, adding visual contrast and reinforcing the martial aesthetic.

Menpō

Facial armor of the menpō type, finished in glossy dark lacquer with a fierce and expressive visage. The exposed teeth and aggressive modeling were designed both for intimidation and protection.

The mask integrates seamlessly with the yodare-kake, composed of lacquered lames and blue cord lacing, maintaining strong visual continuity throughout the set.

Okegawa-dō cuirass, constructed from horizontal lacquered lames, bound with blue and cream odoshi. The lacing pattern is regular and well-balanced, with subtle decorative elements.

The surface shows an honest natural patina, without intrusive restoration, enhancing its historical authenticity.

Sode

Large ō-sode shoulder guards, lacquered and laced in blue, well-articulated and visually imposing without being excessive.

Kote

Kusari-gote arm guards, featuring fine chainmail sewn onto a dark textile base, reinforced with small metal plates. Wear is consistent with age and does not compromise structural integrity.

Haidate

Thigh guards with hexagonal plates sewn onto textile backing, matching the overall aesthetic language of the armor. Well preserved and properly articulated.

Suneate

Greaves constructed from vertical lacquered lames combined with textile and metal reinforcements. Original cords remain, showing functional but stable wear.

Condition

Overall very good condition for its age. Wear to lacing and lacquered surfaces is consistent with genuine use. No major structural damage or obvious modern replacements are observed.

An authentic samurai armor that will be the central focus of any room where it is placed and that will delight any fan of Japanese art. This exclusive piece is making it an incredible opportunity for any collector of Japanese, war or simply historical art to get their hands on a piece that will attract attention wherever it is displayed, from offices, to private homes, offices or restaurants and will give a regal look to any place. The armour has gilded details that show the quality of the piece. The incredible workmanship accentuates such ornate pieces as the kabuto, the mempo and the Do. The stand to assemble it and the box are included. This armour is sure to delight any collector of Asian art and will be the focal point of any visitor’s home, shop or office. There is a very ancient object and there are damaged by time and tears. Due to the delicacy of continuous assembly and disassembly, returns are not allowed on old armor.
