A complete samurai armour of striking martial character, distinguished by its towering eboshi-shaped helmet, radiant solar emblem, and the restrained elegance of lacquer, silk, and iron brought into perfect harmony.

Combining battlefield practicality with ceremonial presence, this gusoku embodies the mature aesthetic of the Edo period, where armour had become both an heirloom of lineage and a symbol of martial virtue. Its rich translucent lacquer, aged ivory lacing, and powerful iconography create an ensemble of exceptional visual authority.

The Solar Crest (Hi-no-Maru)

Dominating the centre of the cuirass is a large lacquered hi-no-maru (日の丸), the red solar disc set against a deep brown ground. More than a decorative motif, the sun held profound significance within Japanese warrior culture, symbolising divine favour, vitality, and protection under the gaze of the sun goddess Amaterasu.

Beneath the solar emblem extends a broad band of gold-lacquered cloud (kasumi), creating a dramatic contrast between heaven and earth while enhancing the armour’s visual grandeur.

Throughout the armour appears a floral crest (mokkō), repeated upon the metal fittings of the armoured sleeves and serving as the clan insignia that unifies the composition.

The Helmet (Kabuto)

The helmet is an impressive example of the eboshi-nari kabuto (烏帽子形兜), a rare form inspired by the elegant court cap worn by nobles and officials. Rising dramatically above the head, its sculptural silhouette lends the armour a commanding and unmistakable presence.

Finished in lustrous black lacquer of excellent quality, the helmet is surmounted by a magnificent gilded crescent moon crest (kuwagata), mounted upon a pierced metal base ornamented with stylised dragon and cloud motifs.

The multi-lame neck guard (shikoro) is laced in aged ivory silk (shiro-ito) and complemented by small black-lacquered fukigaeshi. A decorative orange silk tassel completes the frontal ornamentation.

The Face Defence (Menpō)

The facial mask is lacquered in deep glossy black and paired with a striking throat guard (yodare-kake) composed of multiple lames finished in vibrant vermilion red.

Against the sombre darkness of the helmet, the red throat guard burns like an ember beneath the warrior’s face.

The deliberate contrast between black and vermilion creates one of the most visually compelling features of the armour.

The Cuirass (Dō)

The cuirass is constructed from smooth iron plates and finished in refined tame-nuri, a translucent brown lacquer applied over a darker base to achieve remarkable depth and warmth.

At its centre appears the large red solar disc, flanked by suspension rings mounted with bronze lotus-form washers, details that reveal the quality and sophistication of the armourer’s work.

The lower section of the cuirass is adorned with a broad gold-lacquered cloud motif, while the waist is secured by a padded obi, preserving both comfort and structural balance.

The Shoulder Guards (Sode)

The shoulder guards are formed from multiple lames joined by light silk lacing and bordered with decorative brocade. Applied floral crests echo those found elsewhere on the armour, reinforcing the unity of the ensemble.

The Armoured Sleeves (Kote)

The armoured sleeves are mounted upon richly dyed fabric in shades of teal and ochre and reinforced with dense kusari chain mail.

Patinated iron plates bearing floral relief motifs and rosette decorations are distributed across the sleeves, providing both protection and ornamental distinction.

Tassets and Thigh Guards

The kusazuri consists of numerous articulated sections combining textured gold-lacquered lames with panels of light-coloured lacing set against a darker ground.

The haidate incorporate reinforced plates and traditional kikkō hexagonal armour elements mounted upon fabric, balancing flexibility with effective protection.

The Shin Guards (Suneate)

The shin guards are constructed from black-lacquered iron plates linked with chain mail and secured with traditional fabric ties.

Their understated design complements the martial simplicity of the overall armour while maintaining a high degree of functionality.

Colour and Surface

The palette is both restrained and noble. Deep translucent brown tame-nuri lacquer dominates the cuirass, while the helmet is finished in polished black. Broad passages of muted gold enrich the tassets and cloud motif.

Aged ivory silk lacing softens the composition, while vivid accents of vermilion red, orange silk, and teal cordage provide carefully judged contrasts. Throughout, the patinated iron fittings preserve the dignity and authenticity of age.

Condition

The armour is complete and mounted on its display stand. It retains the natural patina, wear to the silk lacing, and subtle settling of the lacquer that are characteristic of an authentic Edo-period suit that has seen both practical use and ceremonial display.

All principal components are present, and the ensemble remains highly impressive both historically and aesthetically.

Provenance and Collector Appeal

This is a samurai armour of distinctly martial character, whose monumental solar disc and dramatic eboshi-nari helmet create a presence rarely encountered among surviving Edo-period examples.
