Edo Period, 18th–Early 19th Century

A complete samurai armour of exceptional quality, distinguished by its deep indigo-blue lacing, refined kozane construction, and magnificent crescent-moon crest. An armour created not only for protection, but as a visible expression of rank, lineage, and cultivated martial taste.

Built around hundreds of individually lacquered scales and united through dense kebiki-odoshi lacing, this remarkable gusoku exemplifies the sophistication of Edo-period armour making. Richly decorated with stamped leather featuring tigers and peonies, it combines functional strength with an elegance reserved for warriors of considerable status.

The Crescent Moon Crest (Mikazuki Maedate)

The armour’s most striking feature is its imposing golden crescent moon (mikazuki), mounted prominently upon the helmet. The crescent moon held profound significance within Japanese warrior culture and was closely associated with the deity Myōken as well as celestial protective forces.

Favoured by numerous northern warrior lineages, the moon symbol represented guidance, protection, and steadfastness amid adversity. Its commanding form gives the armour a presence that is both martial and deeply symbolic.

The Helmet (Kabuto)

The helmet is a fine suji-bachi kabuto, constructed from numerous forged iron plates converging elegantly toward the crown. The iron surface preserves a deep natural patina, bearing witness to centuries of age and use.

At the apex sits a finely chased gilt tehen-kanamono, while the magnificent crescent moon crest rises above a carefully worked metal base.

Particularly noteworthy are the mabisashi and fukigaeshi, covered in richly stamped leather (e-gawa) decorated with tigers, peonies, and scrolling floral motifs highlighted in gold and red.

The tiger symbolised courage and martial power; the peony, nobility, prosperity, and cultivated refinement.

The broad shikoro is composed of multiple lames connected through dense indigo-blue kebiki lacing and finished with decorative silk edging.

The Face Defence (Menpō)

The facial mask is a lacquered iron ressei-men, modelled with an austere and mature expression. Deep wrinkles, a prominent nose, and a natural hair moustache lend the mask remarkable realism and character.

Attached below is a multi-lame yodare-kake, laced to match the rest of the armour and creating a harmonious visual continuity.

The Cuirass (Dō)

The cuirass is a superb example of kozane-dō construction, formed from hundreds of individually lacquered scales assembled and fully laced using the prestigious kebiki-odoshi technique.

The dense indigo silk lacing creates a surface of remarkable richness and texture, while the upper chest plate is fitted with chased iron mounts and elegant flower-shaped draw rings (gyō-yō).

At the rear survives a large orange silk agemaki, complete with decorative tassel, adding a vivid accent to the otherwise restrained palette.

Iron reinforcements and finely chased gilt-bronze fittings throughout further attest to the quality of the armour’s manufacture.

The Shoulder Guards (Sode)

The shoulder guards are large and imposing, constructed from multiple scale sections and laced in matching indigo-blue silk. Their elegant proportions complement the cuirass and reinforce the visual coherence of the ensemble.

The Armoured Sleeves (Kote)

The sleeves are mounted upon dark blue textile decorated with stencilled golden dragons, symbols of strength, wisdom, and celestial authority.

Dense square-pattern kusari chain mail and lacquered iron plates provide extensive protection while maintaining flexibility and comfort.

Tassets and Thigh Guards

The kusazuri consists of numerous articulated scale sections suspended from the cuirass and laced throughout in indigo-blue silk.

The haidate are particularly impressive, decorated with large golden dragons emerging among clouds upon a dark ground. Rich silk brocade borders featuring dragon motifs further enhance their visual splendour.

The Shin Guards (Suneate)

The shin guards are formed from finely lacquered iron splints combined with chain mail and secured by traditional indigo fabric ties.

Their understated elegance reflects the disciplined character of the armour as a whole.

Colour and Surface

The palette is noble, restrained, and exceptionally harmonious. Indigo-blue silk (kon-ito) dominates the lacing, aged over centuries into a deep and dignified tone.

Black and dark brown lacquer enrich the scales and lames, while the stamped leather introduces vibrant gold and red decoration depicting tigers and peonies.

Gold accents appear throughout the armour in the crescent crest, fittings, and dragon ornamentation, balanced by subtle touches of red and the vivid orange of the agemaki.

The forged iron components preserve an attractive historical patina, complemented by finely chased gilt-bronze fittings of superior quality.

Condition

The armour is complete and mounted on its display stand. It remains in remarkable condition for its age, preserving the natural patina of the iron, the gentle ageing of the silk lacing, and the subtle settling of lacquer and leather expected of an authentic Edo-period suit.

All principal components remain present, creating an ensemble of impressive completeness and authenticity.
